Steel Rises on Shoot The Rapids

The Cedar Point web cam show that steel is starting to rise at the site of the new Shoot the Rapids ride. Over the past few months progress has been made and were finally to the steel. Concrete has been poured and what looks like the mechanical room has taken shape. I know were all looking forward to the 2010 Cedar Point season so we can ride Shoot the Rapids.

May 15th, 2010 is opening day. It brings the new Shoot the Rapids ride. We'll also get a good look at the main gate without the Demon Drop. We all wonder what other changes will be waiting for us. Will Cedar Point still be run by Cedar Fair or not? Only time will tell.

The count down clock has started. Come back often and check the countdown.

Cedar Fair Sells

What a story. Cedar Fair will be sold to the Apollo Global Management . It will turn Cedar Fair in to a private company.

Click here for the Sandusky Register Story.

Cedar Fair had been burden with debt from the other park purchases a couple years ago. That with the drop in park attendance is most likely what drove this sale.

It will remain to be seen as to what will happen to the parks. The article says it will be a merger and that Cedar Fair management will continue to run the operation. Looking at Apollo's portfolio of assets it will be interesting to see how it plays out.

End Of 2009 Season

Hi All,

It was a great 2009 season at Cedar Point. Great weather and great fun. Can't wait to ride Shoot the Rapids in 2010.

Had a chance to ride Demon Drop one last time a couple hours before the end of the night. The line was pretty steady at that point. People taking pictures and talking about the ride closing. I posted a couple pictures in the photo gallery. I do have to say it was a great ride and I'll miss it for sure.

I posted a land clearing photo I took of the new Shoot the Rapids area. Not much to look at. It's just dirt with some footers laying around. I was hoping to see some ride parts around CP but I didn't catch any.

I'm already looking forward to Cedar Point 2010 Season.

So Long Demon Drop

Since 1983 Demon Drop has been an icon at the front entrance of the park. It will be removed after closing day and moved to Knott's Berry Farm in CA.

Will the Demon Drop be missed? That is the question I think a lot of Cedar Point fans are asking right now. It has a ride elements that separate it from other attraction in the park. While the Power Tower is similar in many respects, it just doesn't have the same fear factor that the Demon Drop does. The Power Tower is clearly taller, you are more exposed in the seating, the are multiple ups and downs. The Demon Drop is just one up and a very short down. But the air time is the best feature.

I don't think we will see a save the Demon Drop group pop out of the wood work. I also don't think we will see anyone crying on the last day of operation.

It will be missed and not forgotten.

The bigger question I think most fan's are asking is what will go in it's place? We know CP is big in clearing land for later use. The fact that the Demon Drop has been for sale for so long indicates that something is planned for the area.

Will it be a new restroom or a ride? Looks like we will have to wait and see.

Starlight Experience - Review

Startlight is one of the best non-coaster experiences at Cedar Point. It takes place nightly until Sept 6 along the Frontier Trail.

What is it?

It is a light show that contains thousands of LED lights strung up in the trees and on the buildings along frontier trail. The trail is broke into 4 areas. Spring, Summer, Fall, and Winter, each with it's own colors and theme. Background music is played as the lights change and move.

There are floats with Peanuts characters in each season. Winter is extra special because CP uses fake snow making machines to simulate that its snowing.

Overall I give the Starlight Experience two thumbs up as a great experience that they continue to improve on. This is a great way to end the day at Cedar Point America's Rocking Roller Coast - Ride On!

2009 Season On It's Way

Another great season is on its way at Cedar Point. Big capital improvements still seem to be a little ways a way. It looks like general park updates will be done. The CP blog shows some areas such as the main midway, Magnum entrance area, an area near the beginning of the Frontier Trail near the entrance to MF.

The new Cedar Fair office building looks great. It's a great to see expansion in Sandusky.

I'm looking great to get back to riding some great coasters.

Goodbye Pirate Ride....Well Sort Of.

Cedar Point has announced that the building that once housed the Freedomland Pirate Ride will be the new home to Boo Hill. Boo Hill is the kids fun house that was located each year in the Dogem in front of the Goodtimes Theater. According to the blog pictures construction is well underway.....

So lets step back in time a little and trace some of the history of the building and attraction.

Back in 1964 a park in NY opened up called Freedomland. It quickly fell victim to the NY Worlds Fair that opened in NY in 64. It also was located over a landfill and a not so great area.

A bunch of the ride systems at Freedomland were designed by Arrow which we know and love for some of our great Cedar Point and Disney ride systems.

Unfortunately the Freedomland closed and the attractions were sold off. Cedar Point purchased two of the creative rides. Earthquake and The Pirate Ride were the two they purchased. Earthquake went to it's disaster around the time the Bears showed up. The Pirate Ride was closed shortly after. Rumors around why it closed range from the building was needed for maintenence and two house the Blue Streaks ride controls system to it just stunk.

Was the Pirate Ride Disney quality? No way. It was slightly better than a carny dark ride. For the 60's it was a pretty good attraction.

So what happened next? The boat infront of the ride was ripped out and concrete was laid. The loading area of the building was turned into an arcade. The great painted picture remained at the back of the loading area. The cannon props still remained on the top and the front still looked like the Pirate Ride minus the queue rails and the track.

For a brief time after the video games came out it was used for the Fortune Tellers during Halloweekends. The rear of the build was used for maintenance. You could see in every now and then from the Raptor queue.

As for the old ride system and props? You can see them most Halloweekends. They are either dressed up with clothes and masks or just out in the open. They can be seen when you enter the park usually on the balcony that looks like something from New Orleans. I've seen them on benches. Last year one was at the toll booth at the main parking lot entrance.

From the new constructions wall photos it looks like the building won't look the same. So here is to the old Freedomland Pirate's.....:)
